The excitement of expecting your first child is immense. But how do you set up the nursery for long-term use? A couple of architects asked themselves exactly this question and are sharing their personal experiences.
The decision: Why did you choose a modular stocubo changing table?
“For us, sustainability and honesty regarding the materials we use are our top priorities. To us, sustainability means not only choosing durable and responsibly produced materials, but also ensuring that a piece of furniture can be used for as long as possible. That’s why it was clear to us from the very beginning that we needed a modular system that could be adapted to different spaces and life situations. After being used as a changing table, it should be easy to reconfigure for other life stages and purposes. The result is a piece of furniture that adapts to the needs of its users and can be repurposed time and again – rather than becoming obsolete after a certain stage of life.”

The real-world test: How does the dresser hold up in everyday use, and how important was an ergonomic changing height to you?
“We’re completely satisfied with the changing table. The height is ideal for both me and my husband and makes changing diapers comfortable and easy on the back. The spacious surface offers plenty of room for a comfortable changing pad and all the supplies we need on a daily basis. At the same time, the high side panels of the changing table give us peace of mind and ensure that our little one is well taken care of during diaper changes. She also feels very comfortable there every time and so the changing table has now become an integral part of our daily routine.”

Lifespan: How do you plan to reconfigure the modular system once your child will be past the baby stage?
“We tried out different configurations even before our daughter was born. The shelf can be rearranged quickly and easily, so it can always be adapted to new needs. With a piece of furniture, the question often arises of how long it can actually be used and what space it will take up in the home later on. With the stocubo system, that’s clear from the start: Today’s changing table, for example, can later become a sideboard, a lowboard, or even a cabinet. We already have an idea of what it might look like someday. Whether it’ll actually still be set up that way in two years remains to be seen. It’s precisely this flexibility that makes it so appealing to us.”

Sustainability: How important were sustainability and the absence of harmful substances in your selection process?
“For us as architects, sustainability is a top priority. It’s not just about the materials we use, but also about choosing products that will last as long as possible and can be adapted to new life situations. When it comes to furniture and everyday items, we also pay close attention to where and under what conditions they are produced. Transparency and traceable production processes are particularly important to us. That’s why we often choose smaller brands and manufacturers where the origin and manufacturing process are easy to trace. For us, sustainable consumption ultimately means consciously choosing items that can adapt with us and adapt to the changes in our lives.”

Conclusion: What advice would you give to expectant parents on setting up the nursery?
“We keep seeing those classic Instagram Reels featuring perfectly decorated and fully furnished nurseries. In our experience, however, it’s not at all necessary to have a completely finished nursery ready by the time the baby is born. Not everything has to be ready when the baby arrives.
If you enjoy decorating the room and getting in the mood for the new family member, there’s certainly no reason not to. At the same time, we’ve noticed that having a well-thought-out basic setup makes sense – because after the birth, there’s often surprisingly little time even for small tasks. Our advice, therefore, would be to focus on the essentials and, when furnishing the room, to opt for modular and durable furniture whenever possible. That way, the room can evolve along with the children and their needs, rather than being completely set in stone from the very beginning.”
