Everything about stocubo
easy. modular. fair.
Clear design and fair productionClear design and fair production don't work together? Are you kidding me? As early as 2000, Stefan Oberhofer wanted to prove that both are possible - and he did it! And also created a real innovation. The name stocubo is derived from the initials of its founder and the Italian term "Cubo", which means a "cube". In 2011 stocubo GmbH was founded and the first online shop started. In 2021, we will celebrate 10 years of innovative shelf design in Berlin.
While previously tools were always required to connect shelf elements, stocubo developed a completely new plug-in system: an aluminum bracket with which the shelf cubes are connected to one another.
stocubo still works locally, sustainably and with a strong focus on real team work in the heart of Berlin Wedding, since 2016 under the direction of stocubo managing director Julia Haneke.
The stocubo claim has always remained the same: With a targeted focus on individual furniture solutions and classic craftsmanship, stocubo consciously, consistently and with lasting passion stands out from conventional mass production.
stocubo is not only a flexible shelving system, but also a flexible team that works well together - and at the same time always adapts to new things. To achieve this, the sales team, sales and production departments work together on an equal footing, always in close contact with stocubo managing director Julia Haneke.
In 2016, the law graduate took over stocubo from carpenter and artist Stefan Oberhofer. Her motivation: conviction and passion for the product. Why is she so convinced of the modular shelving system from Berlin?
Here are three questions for stocubo managing director Julia HanekeWhat do you personally particularly like about your modular shelving system?
That you can not only put it together yourself, but also redesign it at any time. stocubo means freedom! And I actually live it myself at home. The third or fourth shelf creation has now emerged from my first cubes. And I also redesign my shelf very spontaneously: You just take off the clamp, stack it again and have a completely different piece of furniture! Nobody is bound to what was originally planned. The shelf simply adapts to life, moves with you and continues to grow with you.
And which areas have grown within the company since you took over stocubo?
When I started here in 2013, we were still a very small team: five full-time employees and a handful of students. In the last few years we have gradually structured and organized the company in such a way that now 200 cubes can be produced in series production every day and sent to customers. We are still based in Berlin Wedding, benefit from the central location and of course from the fact that it is still an up-and-coming neighborhood. The rents are therefore cheap - and there are opportunities for neighborhood help.
What are the most beautiful moments in your day-to-day work?
Fortunately there are many! I find it particularly nice to come back to production again and again, to perceive the smell of wood, to experience this hustle and bustle and simply all the craft that is behind stocubo in action. This is of course a very nice change from everyday office life. It is also important that we communicate regularly between the departments. You can tell that this is an incentive for all sides to get the most out of our little incidents.
Sustainability – we produce under fair conditions
All stocubo elements are made of PEFC-certified wood, which comes from German and French sustainable forestry.
In Germany, the wood is pressed into stable, low-pollutant MDF boards, which are very easy to care for and robust thanks to their melamine resin coating. For production in Berlin, the material is delivered as a finished panel and processed in the workshop by the stocubo carpenters into the hand-made cubes. stocubo focuses on quality and care. So that the customers get something from their shelving systems for as long as possible - and so that the longevity of the furniture means that there is as little disposal need as possible.
Thanks to the innovative clamp mechanism, the cubes can be assembled, dismantled and rebuilt as often as you like without the wood suffering, as would be the case, for example, with the use of screws. Scrap and residual wood from production do not go straight to the rubbish bin, but are processed as far as possible and passed on to social projects if necessary.
"Fair cubes at fair prices". That is the mission behind the modular shelving systems. That is why stocubo manufactures exclusively in Germany. Due to the fairly calculated prices, the company is able to put part of its sales back into local production. And that also means: directly into the quality and further development of the cubes.
In order to guarantee a fair price-performance ratio with short distances, stocubo made a conscious decision in favor of direct sales with a wide range of services - and thus against middlemen and excessive margins. The stocubo team is currently working at two beautiful locations in the heart of Berlin Wedding. Production takes place on the ExRotaprint site, while the showroom is only a few hundred meters away at Exerzierstrasse 14.
The main reason for local production at stocubo was the desire to secure sustainable, fair-paid jobs in the capital.
In addition, social engagement in the Berlin neighborhood has become a matter of course for Julia Haneke and the entire stocubo team.
The company supports a local focal point school with project days, workshop visits and donations, among other things, and gives young refugees and people with disabilities the opportunity to advance stocubo together with their colleagues. The hierarchies throughout the company are flat. stocubo stands for community and teamwork.
